"What is Database Security?"

In simple terms, a database is a place where data is stored. "Database Security" consists of a methodology and technology to protect that data from cyber criminals and company insiders.

In the past few years, you have probably heard about database security breaches in the news. This year has seen an unprecedented amount of data breaches by hacker groups. Recent highly publicized cases involving major retailers, banks, email marketing companies, and government organizations have resulted in the theft of tens of millions of data records. This data has included personal information, credit card information, and sensitive proprietary information, which can be used to make unauthorized credit charges, steal identities, and threaten national security.

Banks, retailers, credit card companies, government agencies, and many other organizations have databases that contain confidential information on millions of customers. The theft of that personal information cannot be tolerated and for that reason, it is necessary for organizations to understand the importance of database security and to take appropriate precautions.
